Older Models - Direct Careers in Fashion

In times of recession, everybody is looking for a way to increase their income. This is perhaps most true for the older generation, who have to find ways of supplementing their pension if they want any little indulgences...
Jo Ashley, a 67-year-old grandmother from Bristol, has opted out of part-time work since retiring in 2002, and instead is working as a model and TV extra. The grandmother of six previously enjoyed a successful career in the medical profession, but had always dreamed of becoming a model.
When she retired, she registered with a series of modelling agencies and secured bookings for brochures, catwalk and TV extra roles in Gavin and Stacey, How To Look Good Naked and Casualty.
Jo believes there are common misconceptions about the need for youth and a particular kind of beauty to become a model. "There is work around for models of all ages," she says. "I'm tall and thin, but you don't have to be."
Jo is just one of many pensioners pursuing modelling opportunities in film, TV, fashion, promotions, advertisements and photography during their spare time. Leading modeling agency Singapore actively encourages applications from older people with a passion for the industry.
